Becoming Campus Recycling Expert Banner

Schools can make use of the following teaching resources, activities and recycling support to enhance students' knowledge on waste reduction and recycling, and community recycling support, with a view to equipping themselves to become recycling experts.

 

Objective

Educate students on waste reduction and recycling and allow them to familiarise with recycling facilities in schools and the community.

 

Expected Outcomes

Through a series of learning and practice, students will be able to:
  • Understand the importance of source separation of waste, and their impact on the environment
  • Master methods of waste reduction at source and proper recycling in daily live
  • Understand the locations of the recycling facilities at schools or in the community and learn how to use them
  • Cultivate waste reduction habit in schools

 

Teaching Resources Support

  1. Teaching Resources: Schools can use the following resources to enhance students’ knowledge on waste reduction and clean recycling and community recycling support.
Teaching Resource Pack

The teaching resource pack provides support to teachers in promoting the concepts of waste reduction and recycling in schools and “GREEN@COMMUNITY” recycling facilities through various lesson plans, worksheets, teaching activities, and extended activities. It also encourages students to invite their family members to practise source separation and recycling in their daily lives.

Content includes:
  • Lesson plan and worksheets (primary schools)
  • Extended activities (primary and secondary schools)
  • Teacher training courses
  • Visits to waste treatment facilities

Resource Packs

Besides, The EPD appointed The Education University of Hong Kong to organise teacher training workshops to introduce the usage of the teaching resource packs and provide an overview of the challenges of waste reduction, waste management measures and community recycling support in Hong Kong. It allows teachers to understand and educate their students on the concepts of waste reduction and recycling and community recycling facilities in the community. In addition, teachers will be able to gain hands-on experience of one of the extended activities proposed in the teaching resource packs (i.e. upcycle the residues of water treatment works into eco-magnetic chess or coaster). Content of the workshops is as follow:-

Secondary Schools: 23 & 30 November, 7 December 2024 (Saturdays)
Time: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Target participants: Primary and secondary school teachers
Quota: 50 pax./session

Transportation: We will offer free shuttle bus transportation between MTR Tai Po Market Station and The Education University of Hong Kong

“Green@Metaverse” Online Game
“Green@Metaverse” allows students to learn the following through virtual games:
 
  • Clean Recycling
  • “GREEN@COMMUNITY” community recycling network

Students can customise virtual identities in the game and be awarded with special gifts after accomplishing missions. For details, please read the promotional leaflet (Chinese version only).

Promotional Materials on Waste Reduction and Recycling
Source Separation and Recycling:
  1. Environmental Education Activities and Support: Promote waste reduction and recycling knowledge, and low-carbon lifestyle through interactive school-based or outreach activities
School Promotion Booths

The Green Outreach Team of the EPD carries out school promotional services to provide students the latest information on waste reduction and recycling, and community recycling facilities through games and promotion vehicles. If students recycle more than 500g of recyclables at school, they will receive a special prize. Additionally, the Green Outreach (GO) Team can offer support and advice for waste reduction and recycling.

Service period: September 2024 to July 2025, all weekdays (excluding public holidays), 9am to 5pm
Duration: Each session lasts around 2-3 hours
Content: GO Team’s promotional service, games booths (with prizes), promotion materials on waste reduction and recycling and smart recycling promotional vehicle (provided subject to service demand)

School Talks

The GO Team of the EPD educates students environmental knowledge like waste reduction and recycling, community recycling facilities, etc. in a comprehensible way through school talks. It is suitable to be carried out in assemblies and other special teaching activities.

Service period: October 2024 to July 2025, all weekdays (excluding public holidays), 9am to 5pm
Duration: Each seminar lasts around 30-60 minutes
Content: Types of wastes, challenges of waste management, principals of waste reduction, clean recycling, community recycling facilities, recycling support, downstream recycling processes etc.

Smart Recycling Promotion Vehicle

The EPD rolled out the “Smart Recycling Promotion Vehicle” with a view to introducing smart recycling technology and user flow of the equipment and allow students to experience the operation of the systems.

Service period: Mid-September 2024 to mid-March 2025, all working days from Tuesday to Friday, 9am to 5pm
Duration: Each session lasts around 3 hours
Content: Introduction and experience sessions of smart recycling systems
Note: Campus must have sufficient space to park a 9-ton truck (8m (W) x 2.3m(D) x 3.4m(H))

Education Panels

Schools can apply for educational panels for short-term display in the campus. Schools can flexibly arrange display period and purposes according to their own needs, with a view to enhancing students’ understanding of source separation of waste.

Schools can apply for one session of 3-hour promotion booth in conjunction with the educational panels to promote waste reduction and recycling through Q&A sessions and souvenir award.

Service period: November 2024 to July 2025 (tentatively)
Rental Period: Up to 7 days
Content: Waste management policies, waste hierarchy, principles of waste reduction and recycling, recyclable types and collection, community recycling network etc.
Note: Campus must have sufficient space to place the educational panels (4m(W) x 2m(H))

Engaging Students in Community Promotion Activities of the Green Outreach Team

The GO Team provides outreach services in the community through on-site guidance and demonstrations to educate members of the public on the importance of waste reduction at source, and encourage the public to practice source separation of waste and clean recycling. They also promote and plan “GREEN@COMMUNITY” services and convey the latest waste management messages to the public.

Schools can nominate maximum 5 students to participate in the community promotions held by the GO Team to apply what they have learnt into practice to educate the public about waste reduction and recycling.

Dates: Community promotion activities held on Saturdays or Sundays
Time: Around 3 hours
Location: We will try to arrange students to participate in promotional activities held in their school district, including but not limited to residential buildings, public parks, shopping malls and markets etc.
Content: Promotes waste reduction, recycling and community recycling networks to the public. Assists in running game booths, distributing promotional materials and prizes.

Visits to the EPD’s Waste Treatment and Environmental Education Facilities
Students can learn about environmental knowledge like waste treatment and resources circulation etc. interactively through participating in the guided tours of the EPD’s waste treatment and environmental education facilities.

Organising other Environmental Education Activities

Schools can contact the nearby Recycling Stations, or the contractors of “GreenLink- Environmental Education Support Programme” directly to arrange environmental education activities (such as school talks, field trips, workshops, etc.)

Application Methods
School Promotion Booths / Talks / Smart Recycling Promotion Vehicle
  • Unless otherwise specified, please apply to your dedicated GO Team member, specifying the proposed activity date, time, photos of proposed location for parking smart recycling vehicle, contact details and methods. We will contact you later on the activity arrangements.

Visits to EPD’s Waste Management and Environmental Education Facilities:
  • Schools must fill in and submit the application form to your dedicated GO Team member 2 months before the proposed guided tour visit date (e.g. if you wish to visit the facility on 1 December 2024, the application should be sent to the EPD by 1 October 2024). Subject to service demand, we will provide one of the priority proposed timeslots to schools as far as practicable
  • The facility operator will contact schools to discuss the arrangement after confirming the reservation
  • Schools have to arrange transportation on their own, and provide the car plate no. to the facility operator direct. Only drop-on/drop-off is allowed, no parking space will be provided in the facilities
  • School must read the terms and conditions. By submitting the application, school agrees to the terms and conditions
General Terms
  • Service quotas are limited. Subject to service demand, the EPD does not guarantee the provision of required services. We recommend schools to contact us at least 2 months before the proposed activity period/rental date to allow timely arrangements
  • To allow more schools to participate in relevant activities, if schools have successfully applied for 3 or more of the above services within this school year, the priority of subsequent applications may be lowered
  • The EPD reserves the final right of approval for applicants
  1. School Recycling Support
Apply for Three-colour Waste Separation Bins

Schools could apply for the 3-colour waste separation bins through the “Waste Separation and Recycling Scheme in Schools” for separation of waste paper, metals and plastics. The EPD can also provide collection services for recyclable materials to schools for free.
